One Word 2023 - Reflect

 Reflect

I made this wall-hanging for my "Word" last year and I haven’t quilted it yet. I wasn't entirely successful in remembering to "pause" last year. I decided to choose "Reflect" for this year's Word. I will be 72 and have lived 2 years past my Mother and Grandmother's ages. I want to make the most of my time, so reflect seems to be apropos for the coming year. I am clearing some of my obligations and commitments from 2022 in order to be open to new experiences and opportunities. However, I will Reflect before saying "yes' and decide if what I am about to do serves who and what I want to do.

Past Words:

2022- Pause

2021 - Grateful

2020 - Joy

2019 - Opportunity

2018- Clarity

2017 - Balance

2016 -  Promise

2015 - Abundance

2014 - Believe

2013 - Simplify

You are my Sunshine

You are my Sunshine: A story of love, promises, and a really long bike ride by Sean Dietrich. MI: Zondervan Books. 2022. 224 pages.  Notes ****

Described as "A laugh-out-loud true story of love, a grand adventure, and a promise kept." The book lives up to the description and so much more. It was only a few years after their marriage that Sean and his math-minded wife Jamie are faced with a medical scare that threatens their future together. Jamie is determined to live a grand adventure and to test life to its limits by proposing a bike ride of the Great Allegheny Passage and the C&O Towpath Trail. Sean is not at all athletic or outdoorsy, but he will promise anything to make Jamie happy in the belief that the bike ride will never happen. Jamie does all the planning, purchasing of needed gear, bikes, tent, grass fed beef sticks, supplies, etc., and Sean finds himself on a trike (he's afraid of bikes) on a trail that includes poison ivy and SNAKES!

This quick read is an adventure filled story of marriage, friendship, and perseverance. Dietrich has a humorous way of capturing everyday events and presenting them in their absurdity to the reader. I laughed out loud at the exchange between Jamie and Sean, "would you eat me? If we were starving!" The kindness of the people they meet along the journey inspires all of us to overcome the fears that holds many of us back from our great adventure. What is holding you back?

I received a copy of this book as a Little Free Library giveaway promotion.

The Girls Who Disappeared

The Girls Who Disappeared by Claire Douglas. New York: Harper, 2023. ****

Four girls enjoy a night out and drive home on the Devil's Corridor ending in disaster! Only one girl is found at the crash site pinned by the steering column and unable to get out of the car. Rescued and unable to remember what happened to her friends leaves Olivia Rutherford open to the suspicious scrutiny of her neighbors and the townspeople. A long and arduous recovery does not restore her memory of that horrific night. It's now twenty years later and journalist Jenna Halliday has arrived in Willshire to interview those close to the missing girls to create a podcast in the hope of turning up new evidence or clues as to what happened on that night. Jenna didn't expect the locals to be willing to talk, however, she didn't anticipate hostility and threats. Are they protective of Olivia or does everyone have something to hide?

I received an e-copy for a review.

This fast-paced psychological thriller will keep you guessing until the very end. No spoilers here. Douglas' plot is ingenious and original. We know that no one can disappear into thin air, however, there are no credible sightings to explain what happened. It has now been twenty years without a clue. A suspenseful read that will keep you reading,  many discussion points for Book Clubs.

Claire Douglas has worked as a journalist for fifteen years, writing features for women's magazines and national newspapers. She wanted to be a novelist since the age of seven, a dream that came true with the publication of her first novel, The Sisters, which won the Marie Claire's Debut Novel Award. She lives in Bath, England, with her husband and two children.

Mini Series Sew Along 2022 Season 3

Alison Glass and Guicy Guice have collaborated and are hosting a Mini Series Sew Along for 2022.

https://alisonglass.com/mini-series-sew-along/

I joined from the very first, however, I am just now making my blocks. Somehow, I couldn't wrap my head around the process of paper piecing such small pieces. I kept trying and trashing. It didn’t help that I purchased a new machine at the same time.

A few suggestions:

  • Print the patten in color
  • Do not print double-sided (a no-brainer, I know)

Finally, three friends got together to sew and it just clicked. I didn't pay too much attention to color placement and even though the pieces are small, you do use pretty big pieces of fabric to make it work.

Meet Trixie and the Triangle Cabin Block.

On of the suggested tools is this seam roller. I found it very helpful in pressing the strips.

Usually when I get to this stage I start to panic that I did something wrong, keep going!

Ta dah!

Trixie has let me know that she does not like Decobob thread.

Block 3 - Bloom - this block was more challenging than the other two!

Block 4 - Rainbow - the last block in Series 3

All 4 in Series 3 are completed, so much fun!

So Long, Chester Wheeler

So Long, Chester Wheeler: A Novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde. Seattle, Lake Union Publishing, 2022. 224 pages. Book Discussion Guide. **** Publication Date December 6, 2022.

Lewis Madigan is young, gay, out of work, and just discovered that his boyfriend is moving on without him. Home all day living next door to Chester, his cranky, rude, homophobic neighbor convinces him that he needs a job now. Since Chester has offended and gone through all of the home health nursing agencies, his daughter is desperate and dangles a large sum of money in front of Lewis for him to step in. The only requirements: run errands, be on call, and put up with Chester.  Can Lewis put aside his loathing and care for Chester? When asked to fulfill a dying man's last wish, will Lewis refuse or accept the mission?

I know when I read Hyde's novels, there will be tears, love, hope, and acceptance. It is so easy to dislike Chester and in the words of Lewis, "I'm always tempted to say hate, but I feel that 's a line I never want to cross." A doctor recently asked me why some older people are so miserable, unhappy, and mean, while others are pleasant, happy, and so nice? An answer requires knowledge of the person's health, finances, and family. Through Chester we get a look at how his past and choices made him who he is today and a glimpse at how Lewis grows with his experience. Given my age, I can relate to Lewis and Chester's struggles. I didn't want this heart-warming story to end and find myself wondering where Lewis is now and what is he doing, the true sign of a good book. Perfect for a Book Club choice, many topics to discuss and explore.

I received an ecopy for a review.

Wait for Me

Wait for Me by Sara Shepard. New York: Union Square & Co, 2022. 322 pages. ****
YA. Reading age 14-18 years.

Casey Rhodes wears many disguises, each one a costume for a different situation. Casey feels it is easier to assume a persona than to be her true self. When she is with her rich, cultured boyfriend, the most eligible bachelor in New York City, she's well-dressed, gorgeous, sure of herself Casey. A crack apppears in her perfect life when she hears a menacing voice in her ear, "You've been a bad girl." Casey begins to feel uneasy and can't understand where the voice is coming from and why does she get flashes of herself in places she doesn't know and who is the mysterious stranger lurking at the edge of her memory? To clear her head and study for finals, Casey chooses an unknown to her shore town and is further confused when the townspeople seem to recognize and know her.

Shepard has created an amazing blend of mystery, romance, and a hint of past lives. Best known for her Pretty Little Liars series, this novel captures your attention from the very beginning and leaves you guessing as to what is really going on with Casey. Mystery follows her in the handsome stranger, Will, who seems so familiar and comfortable, however, she loves Marcus, doesn't she? Well-crafted, the reader will be guessing until the very end. The intended audience is Teen and Young Adult, however, as a mature Adult, I enjoyed it.  I read it in two days, and it is the perfect escape read.

I received an copy for a review.

Sara Shepard Sara is a Canadian-American woman, as her father was born in America, while her mother was born in Toronto. She was raised in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Downingtown High School in 1995. Secrets of the Nile

Secrets of the Nile: A Lady Emily Mystery (Lady Emily Mysteries Book 16) by Tasha Alexander. New York: Minotaur Books, 2022. 320 pages. ****

It is 1904 and Lady Emily agrees to accompany her husband, his difficult mother and recently discovered daughter, on a vacation to Luxor, Egypt. Lord Bertram Deeley, an amateur British collector of antiquities, has invited them for a leisurely cruise up the Nile and then a stay at his house. On the first night of their journey, Lord Deeley collapses, presumed dead by cyanide. Presumably the dinner guests are his closest friends, who among them is the killer?

An alternate story emerges of Meryt, a young woman in ancient Egypt who is a master sculptor. Loved by her family and despised by her jealous sister-in-law, Meryt is asked by her father to make his "Ushabtis, an essential part of his funereal equipment, to stand in for him when he is called on to do work in the afterlife. " These three-thousand-year-old figures play a key role in determining Lord Deeley's killer.

Agatha Christie and Amelia Peabody fans will love this latest novel in the Lady Emily series. Rich with the history, sights and sounds of Egypt, I didn't want it to end. Emily and Colin are at their best interviewing the staff, guests, and potential suspects, while trying to have some time to themselves. Alexander is a master storyteller with the humor of Elizabeth Peters and the cunning of Agatha Christie. Historical fiction at its best.

I received an ecopy for a review.

The Kind To Kill

The Kind To Kill (A Shana Merchant Novel Book 4) by Tessa Wegert. Edinburgh: Severn House, 2022. 313 pages  Kindle Edition ***

Senior Investigator Shana Merchant can't help that she has a serial killer in her family, and it won't be easy to regain the trust of her community. The fact that she hid the identity of the killer and was one of his kidnapped victims doesn't help her reputation as an investigator.

When a tourist goes missing just as the town is preparing for the annual Pirate Days Festival, the eyes of her department and everyone she knows are on her. Cancelling the Event is not even a consideration, so it is up to Shana to find the missing woman before the Festival begins. Last seen arguing with her husband in the hotel parking lot, he is the prime suspect until her disappearance is tied to others.

I received a copy for a review.

This is my first Shana Merchant novel, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I will probably go back and read the other 3 in the series even though it is a cohesive story as a standalone.  Psychological thrillers are my favorite genre, and I was drawn in from the very beginning. The story kept my attention until the very end. Somewhat predictable, with a few surprises along the way. fun, escapism!

Dames and Diamonds

MJ Kinman - Dames and Diamonds

I had the pleasure to meet MJ at the Paducah Quilt Show 3 years ago. When I saw her quilts, they stopped me in my tracks, so gorgeous! When I saw that she was offering an all day class "Dames and Diamonds," at the Mancuso Quilt Show in Oaks, I jumped at taking the class. There were five students in the class and we received individual attention. I chose the pattern, The Clark Diamond as my block to sew.

Pink is not my color, so I chose an alternate color way.  The Clark diamond was owned by Huguette Clark and has a pinkish hue.

To learn more about Hugette's life  and her jewels, visit:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2627292/Never-seen-photographs-copper-heiress-Huguette-Clark-reveal-childhood-Paris-lavish-properties-languished-chose-live-final-20-years-Manhattan-hospital.html

Using MJ's patterns and method, the gems are not difficult to recreate.

I'm not sure how I will quilt it, stay tuned...

Kinman's large quilts are exquisite and I can't imagine making a large one after completing the 17 inch one. The technique is the same and these quilts are amazing in person.

Mad Honey

Mad Honey: a Novel  by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Boylan. New York: Ballantine Books, 2022. 464 pages. *****+

Told in the alternating voices of Olivia McAfee and Lily Campanello, both women are starting over hoping for a better life. Olivia thought she had it all, married to a successful cardiothoracic surgeon, raising her son, Asher, fast-forward to now living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business.

Lily and her mother move to New Hampshire for Lily to complete her high school education in a new school.

Olivia and Lily cross paths when Asher and Lily fall in love. Everyone has a secret past and a trust issue, however, nothing prepares them for Asher being arrested as a murderer.

I received an ecopy from Netgalley for a review.

Heavy on bee information, some may find it superfluous, however, the nature of the bees and their life in the colony adds dimension to the story. Since reading this book, I have heard about "mad honey" on the news (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nVg_ZOfCso)

Not for everyone, readers will either love or hate this book.  I hope that you will stick with it, I can't stop thinking about everything that I learned and understood by the end especially about a society that rejects you based on who you are. The Author's Note as written by each author takes the story in another direction. The fact that the story is collaborative adds depth to the whole and now I really want to know who wrote which character's story.  Jodi Picoult does not shy away from controversial societal issues and there are many in this story. An early ad for the book touts it as one "sure to be banned" which elicited negative comments before it is even published. While true, I hope it does not discourage libraries or readers from purchasing it. Highly recommended for Book Clubs, there are so many topics and points of view for discussion

Klara and the Sun

Klara and the Sun by Kazu Ishiguro. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2021. 303 pages. ***

Klara is a robot (an Artificial Friend) who spends her early days observing the world beyond the store window. Klara enjoys the sun's nourishment as well as the children who stare at the AFs with wishful glances. When Klara and her friend, Rosa, have a turn in the store window, they are surprised to see that there are very few AFs walking with their children or walking by themselves. Life becomes complicated when Josie and her mother chose Klara as Josie’s friend and take her home. Klara and Josie are fast friends and Klara tries to find ways to help Josie heal and become stronger.

This book is my Book Club's choice for September. While I enjoyed it, the story was not a wow for me. I haven't read any other books by this author or other AI storylines, so it may have been my lack of understanding. I enjoyed Ishiguro's writing style and Klara's perspective of human interactions. There is sadness in purchasing a friend for your sick child and then having the artificial friend learn the mannerisms to step in if your child dies. Reviews are mixed and I am ambivalent, I'm glad I read it, however, it's not one that I want to discuss or recommend to my friends.

Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1954and moved to Britain at he age of five. His eight previous works of fiction have earned him many honors around the world including the NobelPrize in Literature and the Booker Prize. He was given a knighthood in 2018 for Services to Literature.

Before She Disappeared

Before She Disappeared: A Novel (A Frankie Elkin Novel Book 1) by Lisa Gardner. New York: Dutton, 2021. 383 pages. ****

Frankie Elkin has made it her mission to find those who are lost and missing. A recovering alcoholic, Frankie goes from town to town researching cold cases and asking questions. Haitian teen Angelique Bodeau is missing from her high school and seems to have vanished into thin air. Frankie travels to Mattapan, a rough Boston neighborhood, and applies for a job as a bartender to get to know the locals and find Angelique. She soon discovers that no one wants her there including Angelique's family and the police.
Being accepted is not necessary, however, discovering and uncovering secrets, draws Frankie into a world of drugs, fake IDs, counterfeiting and murder. Frankie has her own demons to fight, and her mission is complicated by her attraction to Detective Dan Lotham. Frankie has found 14 people prior to Angelique, and she is determined to bring her home alive.

This is the first of two Frankie Elkin's novels, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and read it in two days. I needed to mentally escape, and Gardner's books always fill that vacuum. Frankie is raw, real, and determined not to fail. There is a certain sadness and desperation in Frankie that others can relate to and makes them believe in her and at the same time want to protect and unburden themselves to her.  Can she succeed and stay alive? Will this case bring her the closure she needs, or will she move on to the next missing person?

The second book is One Step Too Far and I can't wait to read it.

Lisa Gardner, a #1 New York Times bestselling thriller novelist, began her career in food service, but after catching her hair on fire numerous times, she took the hint and focused on writing instead. A self-described research junkie, she has transformed her interest in police procedure and criminal minds into a streak of internationally acclaimed novels, published across 30 countries.
Lisa lives in New Hampshire where she spends her time with an assortment of canine companions. When not writing, she loves to hike, garden, snowshoe and play cribbage.

The Last Letter from Your Lover

The Last Letter from Your Lover by JoJo Moyes. New Your, Penguin Books, 2010. 390 pages. ****
Reader's Guide, Questions for Discussion.

It is 1960, Jennifer Stirling wakes up in a hospital to discover that she has been in a car accident and has no recollection of the accident or her previous life. Everything feels wrong about her life, something keeps eluding her and no one wants to talk about it. While going through her things, she finds a love letter tucked away in a paperback novel that suggests a clandestine affair. Unsettled, Jennifer sets out to discover the identity of "B" and to reclaim her lost love.

In 2003, while researching a potential news story, Ellie Haworth finds the same letter in the newspaper archives. Ellie becomes obsessed with finding the lovers and learning their story. Did they eventually end up together and why is this letter filed with seemingly unrelated documents on asbestos? Trying to salvage her own relationship with a married man and her flailing newspaper career, Ellie searches for Jennifer and "B."

I received The Last Letter from Your Lover as my July book in the Book Hive Book Club: Colony of Readers. One thing that I really love about this book club is receiving books to read that either I missed or probably would not choose on my own. This is one of those books. In addition to romance, this is a story of chance encounters and coincidences. Through their parallel stories, Jennifer and Ellie are survivors looking for love.

Moyes has a way with words that helps the reader understand her complex characters and their circumstances. We often read about tragic events that cause people to re-evaluate their life choices and are brave enough to change them. An excellent Book Club and summer reading choice. Many discussion points, or,  if you want to fall into a book and escape for a few hours.

The Last Letter from Your Lover was released on Netflix in select territories on 23 July 2021, in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2021, by StudioCanal, and in Scandinavia on 30 July 2021, by SVENSK.

Jojo Moyes is a novelist and journalist. Her books include the bestsellers Me Before You, After You and Still Me, The Girl You Left Behind, The One Plus One and her short story collection Paris for One and Other Stories. Her novels have been translated into forty-six languages, have hit the number one spot in twelve countries and have sold over thirty-eight million copies worldwide.

Me Before You has now sold over fourteen million copies worldwide and was adapted into a major film starring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke. Jojo lives in Essex. For more information about Moyes and her books, click here.

The Secret Witness

The Secret Witness by Victor Methos. (Shepard & Gray Book 1) Thomas & Mercer, 2022. 301 pages. Kindle edition. ***

"This is Reaper speaking." Has the Reaper returned to continue his killing spree or has a copycat perfected his killing technique? Local Toole County, Utah, Sheriff Billie Gray realizes that she needs help stopping a killer. Solomon Shepard was an outstanding and dedicated homicide prosecutor until a defendant stabbed him in the back while in the courtroom. Solomon stopped practicing law and walks with a cane, however, his resolve at putting murderers behind bars has never left him. The two join forces to identify the Reaper, profiling him to find a missing teen.

I received this book as an Amazon Prime free book choice.

The Secret Witness is a quick, fast-paced read. Methos kept me guessing with just enough hints thrown in to keep me reading. I have many books in my TBR pile, however, I wanted engaging and entertaining without too much thought. A perfect book for beach/summertime reading!

At the age of thirteen, when his best friend was interrogated by the police for over eight hours and confessed to a crime he didn’t commit, Victor Methos knew he would one day become a lawyer. After graduating from law school at the University of Utah, Methos sharpened his teeth as a prosecutor for Salt Lake City before founding what would become the most successful criminal defense firm in Utah. In ten years Methos conducted more than one hundred trials. One particular case stuck with him, and it eventually became the basis for his first major bestseller, The Neon Lawyer. Since that time, Methos has focused his work on legal thrillers and mysteries, earning a Harper Lee Prize for The Hallows and an Edgar nomination for Best Novel for his title A Gambler’s Jury. He currently splits his time between southern Utah and Las Vegas. For more information - https://www.victormethos.com

Patterns by Jen provides the pattern each month and helpful techniques for completing it.

Matching this color is a little more difficult than some of the others. I chose the purple on the left.

The purple fabric definitely photographs darker than the fabric looks.

I ironed the the pieces in half to match up the centers. I am also a Pinner.

I am not happy with the points on this block, when I have more time, I will remake it.

The Mill River Recluse

The Mill River Recluse by Darcie Chan. New York, Ballantine Books Trade Paperback, 2011. 401 pages. A Reader's Guide. ****

Miller River, a sleepy Vermont town, represents hometown America. Everyone knows everyone, no one locks their doors and crime is thought nonexistent. Upon closer inspection, all is not as it seems. Beautiful, sheltered Mary Hayes grows up in Mill River with her father, training and breeding horses. Her life changes the day Patrick McAllister arrives at the farm to purchase his graduation gift, a Thoroughbred Morgan. Patrick, the future heir of McAllister Marbleworks is used to getting what he wants and one look at Mary and she is what he wants. Experiencing trauma in high school, Mary suffers from anxiety and marrying Patrick only adds to her fears. Mary retreats into a world of her own in her marble house on the hill.  Kyle Hansen starts over with his daughter in Miller River as a police officer following the death of his wife. Kyle sees what others don't -- threats, jealousy, arson, and greed. From a pilfering priest to a town benefactor, Miller River has many secrets to hide.

This is June's Colony of Readers Book Club choice, and I am so glad it is, I probably would not have picked it up on my own. Mary's story is one of sadness, acceptance, and finally, love. Chan is very adept at drawing the reader in and holding fast. There are two other books in this series, and I immediately reserved both at the library. (The Mill River Redemption and The Promise of Home) This is an easy read and will be perfect for vacation.

Darcie Chan is the New York Times bestseller author. For fourteen years, Chan worked as an attorney drafting environmental and natural resource legislation for the U. S. Senate. She now writes fiction full-time and lives north of New York City with her husband and son.

The Lost Apothecary

The Lost Apothecary: a novel  by Sarah Penner.  Park Row, 2021. 319 pages. ****

"Rule #1 The poison must never be used to harm another woman." Nella is a woman in 1791 London, who runs an Apothecary catering to women who want to poison the oppressive men in their lives. She sells well-disguised natural poisons in a shop hidden from prying eyes. When 12-year-old Eliza Fanning comes to pick up a poison ordered by her mistress, Nella has a foreboding that this transaction may be her undoing. Meanwhile, in present-day London, Caroline Parcewell has traveled on a vacation that was supposed to celebrate her 10th wedding anniversary until she found out right before she left that her husband was having an affair. Invited by a gentleman on the street to join a group of people who were mudlarking along the river, Caroline finds glass vial with a bear etched on it. Trying to find the origin of the vial leads Caroline to meet Gaynor at the Maps desk in the British Library. Becoming fast friends, the two embark on a journey to discover the mystery surrounding the vial and the dark secrets of a hidden Apothecary.

This book is my Book Club's May choice.

I found this book utterly fascinating and somewhat ironic in the face of current events, men wanting to  enact laws controlling women's bodies. What a diabolical concept, using natural ingredients to concoct a poison undetected by a coroner performing an autopsy in the 18th century. The fact that Nella recorded in her book what formula was provided and who ordered it and who the intended victim was added to the drama and fear of being caught. Women could murder the men who controlled them and never be held accountable for their actions, did anyone immediately regret what they did?  I'm still not clear on the purpose of recording the transaction, was it to cement the loyalty of those she helped? Verify the identity of those who died an untimely death? Cleanse her hands of the crime committed, was she merely the facilitator? I still want to know what was in the tincture created by Eliza. I can't wait until the discussion at Book Club, I'm sure it will be a lively one.

This debut novel with its multi-faceted moral dilemma is a perfect choice for a book club.

Sarah and her husband live in St. Petersburg, Florida with their miniature dachshund, Zoe. Penner offers a Book Club Kit filled with questions, Sarah's experiences mudlarking, and cocktails. To discover more about Sarah Penner, https://www.sarahpenner.com.
